South Africa has gained favour as a rapidly developing country with a diversity unrivalled elsewhere in the world. With 11 official languages, this “Rainbow Nation” is a cultural melting pot, ensuring a rich and varied experience for international visitors and holiday makers. Its riveting history make the country a must-see in light of South Africa’s influence on so many other countries around the world for its progressive democracy and constitution.
South Africa also has a spectacular natural beauty, with a plethora of very different attractions. It’s almost like visiting seven countries in one!
Flanked by both the cold Atlantic and warm Indian Oceans on its west and east coasts respectively, beach-enthusiasts will find pristine white sandy strands, and some of the most phenomenal surfing in the world. Whale watching, shark-cage diving, deep-sea fishing and diving are also popular.
With a moderate climate, winters are mild and pleasant while summers can be very hot. Vast open skies and beautiful sunsets are standard, regardless of where in South Africa one may choose to visit.
Some of South Africa’s more popular attractions include:
Johannesburg, or the City of Gold (“Egoli” to the locals). This vibrant city is the powerhouse of the country, and vibrates at a dynamic pace and energy. Superb shopping (including many centres housing international brands, and superb opportunities to pick up well priced diamonds and gold), fine hotels, historical tours of the Apartheid Museum, the City of Johannesburg, and the legal centre of Pretoria – Johannesburg will no doubt surprise many with its cosmopolitan feel and its developed infrastructure. Soweto is another must-see for a more local perspective with traditional restaurants, and a visit to Nelson Mandela’s previous living place.
Private Game Reserves with animals in their natural habitats are possibly the most coveted of all experiences in South Africa. There are many private game reserves in South Africa, but Journeys of Distinction Pty Ltd only recommends first-class safari experiences. We are therefore affiliated with one of South Africa’s oldest game reserves, MalaMala Game Reserve, as well as The Sabi Sand Game Reserve and Madikwe Game Reserve. The Sabi Sand Reserve flanks the Kruger National Park, and is regarded by many as the best destination for “Big Five” (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo) viewing. The Madikwe Reserve is a popular safari destination as it is located in a non malaria area. It is also known for The Madikwe wild dog populations – one of Africa’s more vulnerable animal species.
Other scenic areas in Mpumalanga include Pilgrims’ Rest, Blyde River Canyon, God’s Window, the MacMac Falls and the towns of Sabie, Hazyview and White River. These areas are best experienced by the more adventurous clients who enjoy driving themselves around and exploring new places. Journeys of Distinction Pty Ltd is also able to book transfers with reputable transfer companies.
The luxurious Rovos Rail or Blue Train are other novel ways in which to take in the beautiful scenery in stylish and elegant surrounds.
Cape Town is without a doubt one of the most beautiful cities in the world. A Mediterranean climate no different to the south of France, excellent shopping and dining, and Robben Island (where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for over two decades). Other iconic touring options include a trip to the top of Table Mountain, exploring the many Cape wine estates, breathtaking whale and shark viewing opportunities and much more.
The Garden Route is a wonderful experience for self drive clients (South Africa enjoys an excellent infrastructure with good quality roads and easily understood signage). Meandering its way along the east coast, visitors are treated to astounding coastal scenery, quaint and charming towns (including George and Knysna), the vibrant Plettenberg Bay – a popular destination with local South Africans for chic beach style and boutique type hotels.
